Groupon business model is soon imitated (creatively) by other entrepreneurs. We had a chance to build a site similar to Groupon in 2010 with these interesting features

• Mailchimp API integration for sending subscribed newsletters
• Users can post to a Facebook wall, and Admin can post information to Facebook fans page.
• Posting tweets using twitter4R gem
• Wirecard payment integration using ActiveMerchant plugin
• Using Gmap to show business locations
• And Cucumber for BDD

In this project in 2010, we are blessed with the chance to work in a Ruby on Rails project from a UK company that features many interesting technologies.

One is VoIP. We first tried using Lypp, but too many bugs and it's very unstable, and fortunately there is another better service for VoIP calling, which is Ribbit. One of its interesting features is to let two users connect on their landline (or mobile) phones by clicking on a button in our website.

Two is Webcam. We know Flashcoms, but we use Red5 in this project, well, because it's free. Red5 server will enable users to communicate via their video cameras within our website.

Three is Worldpay. We have been looking for a payment gateway that supports UK merchants, that enable us to store users credit card information in the gateway to be charged at later time. First it looks like PaymentExpress is the choice, but our client needs to set up a merchant account, which is difficult to approve (he said his business must have been trading successfully for 6 months). And even the approval process is gonna take weeks if not months to set up.

So Worldpay is the choice, although it has worse API guidelines and interface compared to PayPal, it turns out it's pretty easy to set up. We can now store user's credit card information safely on Worldpay to be charged later.

Although Windows Mobile (and Microsoft technologies in general) seems not sexy, but like it or not, they are widely used for enterprise usage.

We have the opportunity to work with one of our Jakarta client building a Windows Mobile application that interfaces with a Ruby on Rails RESTful web service. After a couple of months developing, we just finished it several weeks ago.

The Windows Mobile (WM) software, developed using Net CF 2.0 with C# Managed Codes and .Net ADO technology,  is to be used for one of the distributors of automotive oil in Indonesia, to be used for about 60 salespeople for sales management.

The data collected is then synced with the Ruby on Rails REST web service.

In this project for a Netherland client in late 2009, one of the major features that we built is a multi-language feature for his existing Rails application, an interior design / product site. We have done multi-language feature for several Rails applications in the past, using gettext, gibberish, gibberish_db, etc, but here we use Globalize2 plugin and Rails built-in internationalization I18n.

We used I18n for all our static contents, it’s a piece of cake. And all you need to do is to update that ymls files. For dynamic contents, we use Globalize2.

Here comes the fun part. Because you are most likely be working on an existing application, the bulk of the work is not making a nice back-end for multi-language objects, but it’s making sure the Rails application works correctly after we implement multi-language. It’s especially true when the application doesn’t have a complete test (rspec) suite.

Some things worth noting:

1. All occurrences of find_by_name will no longer work correctly. So grep that and modify accordingly
2. Basically all queries that use ‘name’ field, either on the select clause or condition clause, will also no longer work correctly
3. All routes that need locale path should also be added /locale/ to it
4. Javascript methods within a .js file that calls a Rails action and needs ‘locale’. Simply make a global Javascript variable for the locale and use that when necessary within the .js file
5. Javascript method that uses hard-coded words. Eg.
   this.value = ‘Beware’. Either we refactor it completely since it’s most likely we can do it another cleaner way, or we have to pull out that Javascript method from .js file to rhtml

We helped maintain and upgrade the project mid till end of 2009. The project is a website that aims to gather donation money from the public by a unique and fun way.

Interesting features in this project include:

• Users can login into the site using their site account, Twitter account, Facebook account, and even Google account (using Google Friend Connect )
• We also implement ActiveMerchant to receive donation money
• We use a combination of Selenium to test Javascript, Cucumber, and Rspec for the test framework
